GUNTHER RHON

gunther_header.gifBorn in Vienna, Austria Gunther started surfing around 1963/64 after his parents migrated to South Africa when he was 4yrs old. He surfed in contests for a while with limited success, his best results was a 2nd placing in the Western Province open Mens Title in 1972, and also surfing in the trials to pick the South African Team in 1970. Gunther first picked up the shaping tools in 1972 and in 1973 left South Africa for Australia where he picked up work with Geoff McCoy finish coating and pin striping surfboards as well as honing his skills on shaping. He moved to Lennox Head in 1974 and started Free Flight Surfboards with a friend in 1975 after working at Sol Surfbaords for a year and a half learning how to completely build a surfboard from beginning to end. 1978 rolled around and Gunther picked up his wife and kids and travelled through Bali to live in California and Hawaii for a couple of years. He again picked up work with Geoff McCoy while in California and also with Rick James. In Hawaii, Gunther started to shape boards for Lighting Bolt Surfboards. On arriving back in Australia Gunther was on the go shaping for Brothers Neilsen as well as a stint with Jet and Free Flight Surfboards before joining Town and Country Surfboards for 9 years. In 1992 Gunther started up Local Motion Surfboards Australia and is still running the company to this day. Gunther now resides in Ballina, NSW with his wife and family and travels around the world shaping boards for the best surfers on the planet. Travels include Japan and Europe since the mid eighties as well trips to Indonesia, Hawaii and wherever work takes him.
